How to Install the TWRP Recovery on Android Phone

What is TWRP Recovery

TWRP stands for Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). It is an open-source Custom Recovery tool for Android devices and handsets, which allows the user to access advanced customization functions safely.

TWRP makes it possible for the user to save, install, backup, and restore the firmware on a device.

Installing TWRP makes it possible to try out unreleased or unofficial software. For example customized versions of the Android OS, beta versions of upcoming releases, or apps that are unavailable on the Google Play Store.

Moreover, you can install ROM files, wipe your device clean, back up your device, and restore your device to factory settings using the TWRP interface.

There are different methods to install TWRP recovery. Here, in this case, let’s discuss the method which does not require your device to be rooted.

Although in this case, there is no need to root your device to install TWRP, still you will have to unlock the bootloader. However, installing the bootloader will erase all the content on your device. Furthermore, the method for unlocking the bootloader is different for each device, so your mileage will vary.

What is an SDK platform tool?

Android SDK Platform Tools is a component for Android SDK. It includes tools which interface with the Android platform, such as fast boot, ADB, and systrace.

These tools are required necessarily for Android app development. They’re also required to unlock your device bootloader and flash it with a new system image.

Step#1 Procedure to Install the TWRP Recovery

First of all, download the “Android SDK Platform Tools. You have to search for the SDK platform files and download the proper files depending on your system configuration. You will get the zip file after download.

Step#2 Download TWRP IMG

Secondly, Download TWRP IMG. For this visit, the TeamWin website (twrp.me.com). On the site, you will see a button called “Devices,” at the upper right corner. Click that button

Once you open the devices page, you will need to search for the correct TWRP file matching your device configuration. For this either use the search bar or sort out through the list of OEMs.

When you find the correct device, you will see a section called “Download Links.” Pt will provide two categories to choose from American and Europe. Click the correct link for your region. You will see a list of files to download, select the latest “TWRP.img” file and download.

Step#3: Extract Files from SDK Platform tool

Now, open the folder where the SDK Platform Tools is downloaded and extract the zipped files to wherever you feel is comfortable. After that, copy the TWRP.img file to the SDK Platform Tools folder.

Step#4: Unlock the Developer options from your Android Device

Go to the settings tab on your device and tap on the “About Phone Option.” With this, you will reach a page containing various information about your device. At the bottom of the page, you will see a button named “Build number.” Tap it seven times to unlock the developer options.

Once developer options are unlocked, go back and tap on the developer options. Here in the developer options, find the option “USB debugging” setting and turn it on. Also, locate the “OEM unlocking” button and tap to turn it on.

The device will ask you to enter your security code and will state that unlocking the bootloader will disable the device protection feature. It will allow you to unlock the bootloader at the beginning of the device startup.

However, unlocking the bootloader will delete entire data from your android device. So, make sure to manage a backup for all files, images, data, and settings you want to keep.

Step#5: Connect your Android Device to your PC

Connect your android device to your PC via USB-C. At this point, you may see a message asking you to allow USB debugging, tap “Allow from this computer” and press the OK button.

Step#6: Open the Command Window

Before proceeding to this step, make sure your device is charged to at least 60 percent battery. After that, go to the SDK Platform Tools folder on your computer. Hold Shift and right-click anywhere in the white space, a menu will appear and click on “Open command window here.” Instantly, a command window will open on the screen.

In this command window type:
  • adb devices

then press Enter. Your device will be listed.

After this type:
  • adb reboot bootloader

and then press Enter.

Your device will now enter the bootloader mode.

Now in the command window type:
  • fastboot flash recovery twrp.img

Finally, in the command window type:

fastboot boot twrp.img

Your device will begin to boot, and the TeamWin logo will appear and will start installing. It will take two to five minutes to install, depending on your device.

Congratulations! TWRP recovery has been installed on your phone. Now you can backup, install, wipe, root, and restore whatever you would like to do to your Android device.
